The Law Was Our Inheritance, Not Our Burden

*The Law Was Our Inheritance, Not Our Burden*

> `Moses commanded us a law, Even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob. Deuteronomy 33:4`

When Moses called God’s law an inheritance, he was reminding people that God’s Word is not a burden laid upon them, but a treasure given to them. An inheritance is received because we belong to the family. Before God gave Israel commandments, He gave them Himself. The law was not a way to earn His love; it was a gift flowing from His covenant love.

When we read God’s Word, we are not reading a list of restrictions. We are receiving a revelation of God’s heart. Every commandment tells us something about who He is—His holiness, wisdom, justice, and love. The law was God’s way of saying, “This is the path of life. Walk in it.”

What many people see as limitation, faith sees as protection. God’s commands are like the banks of a river. They do not stop the river from flowing; they give it direction and strength.

The psalmist could say, *”O how love I thy law!”* because he saw it as a privilege, not a pressure. When you understand that God’s Word is your inheritance, obedience becomes less about duty and more about delight. You no longer ask, “What must I do?” but “What has my Father spoken?”

And ultimately, this inheritance points us to Christ. The law reveals God’s will, but Jesus gives us the power to walk in it. Through Him, God’s Word moves from stone tablets to the heart. God has not merely given you rules to follow; He has given you His Word to treasure, His wisdom to guide you, and His heart to know.
