Underneath Are the Everlasting Arms

Underneath Are the Everlasting Arms

> `”The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”— Deuteronomy 33:27 (KJV)`

As Moses stood at the end of his life, having led Israel through forty years of wilderness, he left them with a truth greater than all the miracles they had witnessed: Human leaders may pass away, but the everlasting arms of God never fail.

Though Israel often looked to him as the answer to their problems, Moses knew that he had never been the true source of their survival. God had been carrying them all along.

When they faced hunger, thirst, enemies, rebellion, uncertainty, and failure, it was not Moses’ strength that sustained them. Beneath every trial were the everlasting arms of God. Even when Israel stumbled, God did not abandon them. He upheld them, preserved them, and carried them forward according to His covenant faithfulness.

As he prepared to leave, Moses did not direct the people’s attention to his leadership, achievements, or legacy. Instead, he pointed them to the God who would remain after he was gone. The heart of Moses was this: “Do not trust in the servant; trust in the God who carries His people.”

The greatest leaders are not those who make people dependent on them, but those who teach people to depend on God. Moses’ final testimony was that the same God who had carried Israel through every wilderness would continue to carry them into the future.
