*When Familiarity Becomes a Barrier to Faith*
> `“And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself…” — Luke 4:23`
Jesus returned to Nazareth, entered the synagogue, read from Isaiah, and declared that the prophecy concerning the Messiah was being fulfilled before them. Yet the people asked, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” (Luke 4:22). They knew Jesus naturally—His family, His background, His hometown—but failed to recognize who He was spiritually.
Familiarity made the people of Nazreth dismiss what they should have discerned. They rejected a message simply because they knew the person delivering it. The people of Nazareth had also heard about Jesus’ miracles in Capernaum and wanted Him to prove Himself in their hometown. It is possible to be around Jesus regularly and still become spiritually familiar with Him. We can attend church, read the Bible, sing worship songs, serve in ministry, and yet lose our sensitivity to His voice.
The tragedy of Nazareth was not that Jesus was absent. He was there, they heard Him, and yet they failed to receive Him. They saw the man they knew and missed the Messiah standing before them. Never let familiarity become greater than faith. Never let routine replace expectation, or offence silence conviction. Stay humble enough to hear God, even when He speaks through someone familiar.
