Hunting hearts!

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds curing their pains and their sorrows. Psalm 147:3

Your hurting heart is important to God. It doesn’t matter if the circumstances that caused your pain happened years ago or if something happened last night that sent your heart into a sadness spiral. Maybe it’s been more of a slow leak this time, and you’re noticing that your heart is not nearly as light as it used to be. Hurting hearts are not always an indicator that we’ve failed to guard them well enough. Pain is an indicator that something has happened, and we need to slow down, step back, and pay attention.

If you accidentally slam your hand in a door, it hurts. You cradle your hand and keep it close to your body to prevent further injury. You may even need to visit a professional to discuss options to heal the damage. But if you ignore the pain and continue with life after your injury, pretending like nothing ever happened, you run the risk of making things worse.

Pain is a reality of life, not a cause for shame. Being sad or grieving a loss is a normal and healthy reaction when something happens that goes against what we had expected or hoped for. Ignoring our hurting, tender hearts and get over it may seem like it helps for a little while, but broken things need a chance to heal well. Broken parts that are not dealt with will set incorrectly, and they lose the ability to do what they were meant to do over time because the pain wasn’t taken care of at the beginning.

The Bible doesn’t say that God looks down on the brokenhearted, angry with them for not being able to get it together. There’s no mention of God shaking his head and saying, “I wish she had pick herself up and move on already.” Instead, he is close by. He saves us from feeling crushed inside. He will never leave us, no matter how hurt or broken we may feel.
