Stay attentive, lest you be tempted!
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
1 Corinthians 10:12 NIV
Paul’s warnings in today’s verse deserve a prominent place on our mirrors, dashboards, desktops, and computers; “If you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!”). All Christians with that old mindset are susceptible to sin. Without renewal of mind, there has never been some mystical power that makes men immune to sin.
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). Pride makes men complacent towards sinful atmosphere. Consider how easily the sexual sin overtook Lot, Samson, David (“a man after God’s own heart”), Solomon and the Corinthians. What level of pride is required to believe that it will not overtake you?
These were all warning markers—danger!—in our history books, written down so that we don’t repeat their mistakes. Our positions in the story are parallel—they at the beginning, we at the end—and we are just as capable of messing it up as they were. Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence.
Your brother in Christ,
Apostle Ashok Martin
